Features of a Good Portable Dog Pen

A portable dog pen can allow your dog an opportunity to play in a secure area whether you’re at home or traveling. Whether simply creating a barricade or providing an enclosure for your dog, a portable dog pen is a great accessory for a dog owner who need to contain her dog. While there are many varieties of portable dog pens on the market, it is important to select a pen that will suit the needs for both you and your dog, providing him a safe area where you know he can’t escape.

Features of a Good Portable Dog Pen

  • Solid construction is critical when selecting a portable dog pen. No matter what the pen is made of, it should be able to resist being knocked over should your dog decide to jump up on it.
  • Composition of the pen should be appropriate for your dog. Pens may consist of heavy gauge wire, plastic, wood or even a fabric covered construction. If your dog is prone to chewing or has a destructive nature, it would be best to get one of the pens made of heavy gauge wire as it is less likely to deteriorate from being chewed on.
  • Compact storage is also critical for a portable dog pen. Since most constructions consist of 8 panels, they typically fold flat so they are easy to pack into a vehicle.
  • Configurability is a nice feature to have in a portable dog pen as it allows you to set up the pen according to the space available. Most 8 panel pens can be configured into an octagon or into several rectangular shapes from a square to a long narrow rectangle.
  • Durability is important when selecting your dog’s enclosure. Make sure the hinges that allow the panels to open and fold are strong and will hold up to multiple uses. If you’re looking at buying a wire enclosure, check to see the wire resists rust, especially if you plan to use the pen outdoors.
  • The height of the pen should be appropriate for your dog. Find out how tall your dog is when standing on his hind legs. Select a portable pen that is taller than his height to ensure that he is less likely to escape by jumping over the enclosure.
  • Closures for the pen should be secure. Portable dog pen manufacturers have a variety of closure mechanisms, so select a pen with closures that will last for a while. Many utilize a latch similar to those on the end of a dog leash. Depending upon the closures, many pens can be used in conjunction with a crate or kennel.
  • Pens with doors make it easier to get your dog in and out of the pen. Just be sure that the door can be securely latched.

Portable dog pens are a handy accessory to have around the house or when you’re traveling. With the many varieties of pens on the market, you can select the type of pen that works best for both you and your dog, providing a safe and secure area for him to play.
