Is My Dog Pregnant?

If you are asking yourself the question: "Is my dog pregnant?", you can look for a few pregnant dog symptoms that may be present in your pet.

Vomiting

At the beginning of the pregnancy, the dog might be vomiting. Consequently, she will lack an appetite and she will lose weight.

Later in the pregnancy, she will gain her appetite back and she will surely gain more weight.

Not all dogs experience “morning sickness” and vomiting during pregnancy.

Inactivity

You will notice that your energetic dog is no longer that active and she will engage in less games and activities. This may be a pregnancy symptom; however it may point to different health issues.

Swollen Nipples

A pregnant dog will have swollen nipples. You will notice that the nipples look different and have a darker color.

Behavioral Changes

A pregnant dog is more caring and affectionate. She will be seeking your attention and when the delivery time is near, she will look for a quiet place.

Increased Abdomen

The abdomen of a pregnant dog will be larger than usual and you can feel some lumps, which are the puppies. Towards the end of the pregnancy you may notice when the puppies move.

The pregnancy symptoms are quite subtle in a dog. However, if you know your dog and her behavior you will notice the changes.

An ultrasound can give you a clear answer of whether your dog is pregnant or not. The pregnancy lasts 63 days on average or 9 weeks.
