7 Attributes of a Good Holistic Veterinarian

If you’ve decided you’d like to try alternative treatments in veterinary medicine you can use this guide help you choose a holistic veterinarian. While any given holistic vet may employ a large array of methods such as homeopathy, massage or nutriceuticals/orthomolecular medicine, there are 7 general attributes to look for.

1. Comfort

Your animal should be comfortable with your holistic veterinarian. The vet should be gentle, patient and loving with your pet. The vet should understand your animal and be able to explain everything that is happening with your pet to you.

2. Informative

Your vet should be willing and able to answer all of your questions. For example, your vet should always be able to clearly explain why he has selected a certain treatment for your pet, and what the expectations and risks are using that treatment.

3. Knowledgeable

Your vet should be fully trained, certified and knowledgeable in any treatment he or she advertises. Holistic medicine encompasses several different modes of treatment:

  • Chiropractic
  • Herbs
  • Acupuncture
  • Homeopathy

If the holistic vet advertises that he's an expert in one or more of these treatment modes, make sure that he is. Don’t hesitate to ask to see documents proving these qualifications.

4. Network of Practitioners

Your holistic vet should have a network of other skilled practitioners to call on. Since so many types of treatment are used in holistic medicine, no single vet is skilled in all of them. A good holistic vet might call in someone to assist in treating your animal. For instance, your vet may be certified to offer chiropractic treatment or rehabilitation/physical therapy, but may have to call in a nutritionist to choose dietary supplements, or a homeopath for medicinal treatment.

5. Collaborate with Traditional Vets

Your holistic vet should be willing to collaborate with allopathic (Traditional Western) veterinarians. These partnerships are very common today, and many allopathic vets have become aware of the benefits and successes associated with holistic medicine, and call in holistic vets to help them regularly. In fact, the best kind referral you can receive to a holistic vet is a referral from your traditional veterinarian.

6. Comprehensive Wellness

A holistic treatment approach should address every aspect of your animal’s health. Even though you may consult your holistic veterinarian about a specific complaint, the vet should treat your animal with improving every facet of its health in mind. The vet will also educate you in various principles of holistic healing and treatment so that you can become a full partner in your animal’s healing process.

7. Conventional Tests and Exams

A good holistic vet is always ready to use information gleaned from conventional veterinary medical tests and exams. These tests may include ultrasound, MRI scans, radiograms and blood tests. Any good holistic vet not only takes such data into account when settling on a treatment strategy, but many holistic vets order this conventional testing themselves.
