What Is the Best Puppy Dog Food?

Food and nutrition are the building blocks for the health of your puppy. The best puppy dog food provides the nutrients your dog needs in each calorie your dog takes in. Food with empty calories, processed ingredients, too many carbohydrates, and not enough moisture can lead to obesity, diabetes and other serious health problems. This article will explore issues related to dry dog food, natural dog food, and navigating your way through puppy food reviews.

Dry Dog Food

Some dry dog food, or kibble, is better in quality than others and there are advantages and disadvantages to kibble in general. Kibble can help with teeth cleaning and strengthening and is often less expensive than wet or raw dog food. The nutritional disadvantages, however, far outweigh these advantages. Dogs need moisture in their food in addition to fresh water to get enough hydration. Kibble can often have processed ingredients and empty calories in fillers and grains. Choose a kibble that has whole foods and mostly animal protein in it and then mix it with moist food for best results.

Natural Dog Food

The best puppy dog food contains ingredients that are closest to their original form in nature and mimic what dogs would eat in the wild. A natural dog food will contain whole animal protein listed in the ingredients as “chicken” or “lamb” versus “chicken by-products” or “chicken meal”. Natural dog food will also contain a minimum of ingredients you don’t recognize, chemicals, fillers, or colorings. Natural dog food comes in moist canned food, raw food, or can be homemade. You can find excellent natural dog food in a pet store or you can make your own if you learn about the exact nutrition your dog needs at any given age and stage.

Raw Food

A high quality raw food is really the best puppy dog food. It most accurately mimics what dogs eat in the wild which is mostly raw meat. Most pet stores will have a freezer with raw food for puppies and dogs. Most raw food is geared toward being natural but read the ingredients to find the food with the least fillers and chemicals. The main disadvantage of raw food is that it requires a bit more preparation time and can be a bit more messy. It also has to be handled very carefully and kept fresh. You can prepare raw food at home if you learn exactly what ingredients and in what amounts to use for your dog at any specific age.

Puppy Food Reviews

In reading puppy food reviews, it’s important to consider the individual needs and preferences of your own dog. Puppy food reviews online can help you learn about ingredients as well as general trends in what dogs today like to eat. You can also look up reviews related to food for your dog’s breed, weight, allergies, or other specific issues. After getting some ideas from puppy food reviews, talk to other dog owners, your vet, and anyone who has expertise in dog nutrition. Then get a sample of the food you’re going to try to see if your dog likes it.
