Getting Your Dog Used to a Pee Pad

Using a dog pee pad is a good idea if you keep your pet indoors. Getting the dog used to using it can be easier for some dogs. There are dogs that start using the pads immediately, while others will hesitate; keep your calm and help your dog get used to pee pads.

DOG URINE SCENTED PADS

Encourage your dog to use the pads. Try using pads that are scented to imitate the dog urine scent, so that your dog will know what the pad is for. There are also some toilet training liquids available in pet stores. Add a few drops on the pads and the dog will be likely to urinate in this area.

OBSERVE YOUR DOG

Try to spend some time with your dog and observe the signals he gives before urinating. When you see these, rush him to the pee pads area. Your dog will make the association and in the future might take the initiative and run without being rushed.

GIVE A TREAT AND APPRAISE

If the dog has properly used the pee pad, make sure to reinforce the behavior by giving treats and appraisal words. The dog will associate the usage of the pads with the treat and your positive words and will be likely to repeat using the pads.
